Taíno Figure Replica

YOCAHU VAGUA MAOROCOTÍ: God of Fertility of the Land, also know as ‘The Spirit of Yuca’ (Cassava) and ‘El Yucador’, being this last title one with strong sexual connotations. Yocahu’s figure was often buried in the fields to fertilize the land and get abundant crops. Yuca (Cassava) is a starchy root vegetable central to their diet.

Indigenous Taíno people were the largest group inhabiting the Caribbean islands at the time of European contact in 1492. Their territory extended from Venezuela to Florida including the Bahamas, being Cuba, La Hispañola and Puerto Rico the most populated territories. By 1550 the Taíno were almost extinct due to illnesses brought to their territories by Spanish colonizers, however, their art and vocabulary survived being kept alive by ‘mestizo’ descendants.

CLAY FIGURINES

These Taíno artwork figurines are handmade from clay and fire, then painted in a variety of neutral and bright colors.
