Taíno Figurine

CACIQUE MAROCAEL: According to Taíno mythology, Cacique (Chief) Marocael was responsible for guarding a mythical cave called Cacibajagua, where the first Taínos used to live. However, one day he arrived late to his post and was turned into stone by the gods.

Indigenous Taíno people were the largest group inhabiting the Caribbean islands at the time of European contact in 1492. Their territory extended from Venezuela to Florida including the Bahamas, being Cuba, La Hispañola and Puerto Rico the most populated territories. By 1550 the Taíno were almost extinct due to illnesses brought to their territories by Spanish colonizers, however, their art and vocabulary survived being kept alive by ‘mestizo’ descendants.
